Monthly Chamber Meeting
Monday, November 14, 2016
The meeting was called to order by President, Malcolm Brown at 6:35 P.M. with six board members present and 28 visitors present. The invocation was led by Chamber Member, Dr. Lola Lockett and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Board Member, Scott Duncan.
President, Malcolm Brown welcomed visitors and let them know that they can go to the Hempstead Chamber of Commerce website for announcements and that our meetings are held the second Monday of each month at the Chamber building at 6:30 P.M. President, Malcolm Brown also stated that the Chamber is here to promote our businesses. Board Member, Luther Jones welcomed new members to the Chamber and hoped that they would be ready to volunteer and work for the Chamber.
Chamber Minutes for October 2016
The October 2016 minutes were reviewed by the Board Members. A motion was made by Board Member, Scott Duncan and a second by Treasurer, Barbara Bezub that we accept the October 2016 minutes as they were submitted by Secretary, Cheryl Carter Hardwick. A vote was taken and the motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report for November 2016
The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer, Barbara Bezub and the balance as of Monday, November 14, 2016 was $44,650.42. A motion was made by Board Member, Luther Jones and a second by Board Member, Samantha Glover to accept the treasurer’s report as submitted by Treasurer, Barbara Bezub. A vote was taken and the motion carried. Treasurer, Barbara Bezub reported that the balance on the Chamber building note is now $6,707.20. Treasurer, Barbara Bezub also reported that the monthly expenses were all regular payments for the Chamber except for a donation of $1,000.00 for the Liendo Civil War Festival.
The membership report was given by Secretary, Cheryl Carter Hardwick. New member for November was the Gist Law Firm. Renewals for October 2016 were Amsler and Associates, Edmonds Insurance, First Baptist Church, Flooring Discounters, and Looney & Conrad.
There is a total of 130 Chamber members and 406 Facebook followers as of November 14, 2016.
Office Help for The Chamber Office
President, Malcolm Brown stated that the Chamber needed someone at the Chamber office. A motion was made by Board Member, Scott Duncan and a second by Board Member, Luther Jones that we table the hiring of someone for the Chamber building until the next executive meeting.
Chamber Member, Ben Tibbs asked the blessing and dinner was prepared and served by Bertha Thomas Wolfe and Family.
Singers Desiree Jolivet and Margo Tompkins with New Faith Ministries, and dancer Alexis Lane with Mt. Corinth Missionary Church entertained guest during dinner.
Chamber Board Elections for Upcoming Year 2017
President Malcolm Brown, stated that Board Member, Scott Duncan would be passing out the ballots and Board Member, Luther Jones would collect the ballots. He stated that there are four positions up this year, but only three Chamber members were running for the positions. President, Malcolm Brown, introduced the Chamber members running for positions, Staci Sisley, Barbara Bezub, and Samantha Glover. He also stated that each member would have the opportunity to say a few words about themselves. President, Malcolm Brown introduced the current Chamber Board Members, Scott Duncan and Luther Jones, Treasurer Barbara Bezub, and Secretary, Cheryl Carter Hardwick.
Board Member, Samantha Glover thanked Bertha Thomas Wolfe and Family for the preparing the food for the banquet. She also stated that they are responsible each year for putting together the Martin Luther King Parade and the Juneteenth Parade. Board Member, Georgette Smith thanked Desiree Jolivet and Margo Tompkins for volunteering on such short notice, for others cancelling at the last minute.
Five door prizes were given out and the winners were, Sharon Williams, Scott Duncan, Arie Muse-Walker, Paul Looney, and Dr. Lola Lockett.
Upcoming Local Events
Board Member, Luther Jones talked about the upcoming Festival of Lights to be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 in downtown Hempstead. He also stated that he would be having a sports festival during the Christmas break with more information to follow. Dr. Aisha Asby, stated that there would be a meeting for the Preparation of College on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the Hempstead Community Center from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. across from the Court House. She also stated that on Saturday, November 19th, 2016, there would be a meeting for Long Term Care at Denny’s at 4:00 P.M. and it will be sponsored by Nationwide.
Old Business / New Business
President, Malcolm Brown, along with Board Member, Luther Jones stated that they would like to have back the Brown Sugar Band to the Festival of Lights. They had played back at the Watermelon Festival as entertainment on Saturday. President, Malcolm Brown stated that an executive meeting would be called and a decision would be made by the board. Board Member, Scott Duncan stated that there would be a By-Laws Workshop and the tentative date would be for November 29, 2016.
A motion was made by Board Member, Scott Duncan and a second by Board Member, Luther Jones that we adjourn the meeting. A vote was taken and the motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 7:53 P.M. The next monthly Chamber meeting will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 6:30 P.M. at the Chamber office.
